In the eighty-sixth episode of The Just Checking In Podcast, we checked in with Tom Fleming.
Tom works for The Big Step, a campaign project formed and run by people who have suffered gambling harm. They are part of Gambling with Lives, a charity set up by bereaved family members and friends who have lost loved ones to gambling-related suicide.
Together, they advocate for a public health approach to preventing gambling harms, which would include an end to all gambling promotion, especially in football.
In this episode we talk about how Tom got involved in The Big Step, the work they do, the impact that gambling addiction has on people’s mental health and why its so important that there is a greater check on gambling’s influence on football.
We also discuss Tom’s personal gambling addiction story, how his addiction affected his finances and other parts of his life and how having eczema as a baby impacted his life growing up as well.
